From bitumen and rubber to tiles, slate and metal, compare the function and complete build-up first. A material name alone cannot establish suitability.
A roof is a system
The covering works with the structure, insulation, vapour control, fastening and drainage. Materials may require a separation layer or specific substrate. Compare quotations covering the same components, including any planned solar panels, terrace or planting.
Include maintenance in the choice
Ask how seams and junctions are maintained, not just how long a surface may last. Keep outlets accessible and identify compatible repair products. A product warranty is not the same as a warranty on all installation work.
